Dry needling (also known as Western acupuncture) can be a very effective treatment alongside osteopathy. It can help to break the pain cycle caused by muscular tension and spasm with conditions such as:
• Lower back pain
• Muscular strains
• Ligament strains
• Disc injuries
Dry needling uses a small solid filament needle which is inserted in a contracted, painful, knotted muscle, to create a controlled lesion. The body responds to this by activating its immune system and fighting inflammation. The term ‘dry’ is used because nothing except the needle is inserted into the skin (unlike in a vaccination for example). With dry needling, the needle itself and the body’s response to it constitutes the treatment.
